As for the gearbox I am aware that the outrunner has no gearbox. However due to the design of the motor it does provide some form of gearing as the external part of the motor rotates instead of the armature. It is just interesting that the outrunner setup uses 18inch diameter props while the hacker setups are using the 22inch setup. Certainly an important consideration if you intend to retrofit an existing model with marginal ground clearance.
