I took the engine out and checked all the bolts. Everything was tight, so I decided to change the gaskets. That seems to have solved the problem. The midrange is still a bit off and needs a bit of fine-tuning, but it's running stronger and I haven't had a dead-stick since I changed out the gaskets.
