Splicing electrical wires togther is fine. Heat shrink is a wonderful insulator. For a plane I suggest sliding the heat shrink on then splice the wires. Heat the wire and add a little solder to strengthen the splice. Will help conductivity too.

Or not....just keep your wire sizes equal or larger and make sure the connection is good.
