Something you may want to look into is some of the brushless electric 3D planes. You'll learn fast on one and have a plane that you can fly many places other than the flying field. They are a little pricy to start with, but the airframe can be replaced for $35 - $50. Look at the Ikarus Shock Flyers and the Hell Raiser which is available from Hobby Lobby.
