I think the 8-40 thread is the older pre-1929 thread standard for fine threads. The U.S. is now using the 8-32 as the fine standard.

Rutland tool and supply has the earlier styles, at about $9 each. The 8-40 is part number 2144-0053. According to thier catalogue they have a Canadian outlet too.
