RE: cheatest crewler
Your best option for a new budget crawler is a TXT-1, with electronics expect to pay around $550.00 to $600.00.
Another option is the Kyosho Twin Force which goes for around $280.00. It will do OK out of the box but has room to grow.
If you can't spend that much money I would suggest checking out the crawling forums "For Sale" pages. I would also suggest Ebay for some crawling deals. Sometimes you can find a decent crawler for $200.00 to $300.00.
There are not a whole lot of options out there for crawlers really. Most trucks are either Clod, TXT or Kyosho Twin force's that have been modified.
You will also need to choose if you want to go Clod style (motors on the axles, with independent power to each axle) or shaft driven (center mounted tranny that powers both ends of the truck equally).
You can make a very good crawler out of the TLT, it just takes some work. My TLT is about an inch shorter and 2" narrower than a stock TXT-1, but has about 1" to 1.5" more center ground clearance and a much lower center of gravity. If you want a fun project this is the way to go. You can also make really nice scale looking crawlers out of the TLT. Their limit is about a 13" wheelbase though, so on large obstical courses they can lag a little.
