Thank you to everyone for their input and feedback. I didn't realize the AMA offered an "incentive" to wait until after Oct 1. to join. My point with having to pay membership dues this year is that I would (most likely) be paying full price for only 3 months of service. Now that I know that after Oct. 1 I essentially get the rest of this year free, I don't feel so bad. It's not a question about spending the money (I already know this can be an expensive hobby), it's a question of spending my money wisely.
