And in addition to your comment above it's easier, lighter and cheaper to minimize the damage to the wing tip than to completely redesign the landing gear.
redesigning the landing gear might cause other problems too. for example, the DR-1s face-plant problem could've been fixed by moving the gear forward but then the lightly built aft fuselage would have to carry more weight on landings.
