I agree with Minn (again) the Ultra Sport is a nice way to get your feet wet. Great kit with great plans and instructions. A tTger II would also be nice. Both are good fliers. The US is more a pattern plane. It flies very smooth and fairly fast. The Tiger is smooth as well but is slower. It is a very good sport plane. The 4*40 is my last suggestion. The kit is designed with the first time builder in mind. So any of the 3 would do it. Good luck with it.
