Gp Pitts issues
This is just a rant, but I am assembling a GP Pitts over the last few months. Well NOTHING fits on this plane. The bottom wing was way skewed to the fuse, so bad the belly pan would not line up with the fuse stringers until I modified it. The firewall was cut out with an x-acto knife. It had large gaps all the way around it, and held in with hot glue.
Yesterday I went to put the top wing on, and find out that the incidence is off by about a degree. The bad part is, the wing was positive in relation to the bottom wing which is BAD news for a Bipe. I checked the firewall and tail, and they are both within 1/2 degreeof being right to the bottom wing. that means the cabanes are off.
Oh wait, I had to enlarge the holes in the cabanes to be able to shift them some to get the top wing mount holes to line up anywhere close. This could have caused the incidence problem, but when all the holes are drilled for you, what do you do?? The bracket holes in the top wing that hold the infamous breaking brackets are also off. The brackets they specify to go there will not fit. The holes in the wing are drilled too close together. I had to improvise on that as well. I ended up taking some of the flying wire brackets and modified them to work, and acutally it worked out okay.
After I get the top wing on, it is skewed to the fuse the OPPOSITE way that the bottom wing was. If built without checking, this would be one crooked airplane.
So at this point I have everything within 1/16 to 1/8 of being square, and within 1/2 degree of incidence. All that I need to do is build a new firewall structure to mount my OS 300 on. It is curious to me that this is a recommended engine, but they mention NOTHING about it in the manual.
Anyway, just a bit miffed at kit/ARF quality....
