I made a stand from pvc (use schedule 40, thicker, stronger and stiffer). The "base" is rectangular, and extends about 6 inches longer than the plane (split the difference fore and aft). Just forward of the wing LE and just forward of the elevator LE, I have "crossmembers" which have an upright and a "U" shaped pice that the plane actually sits on, in its flying attitude and the gear just off the table (or floor)These "U" pieces have uprights long enough to go just above the top of the plane so you can put rubber bands on them tho hold the plane in place for transport. On the "base" i have "T" pvc fittings angled slightly out from vertical that are threaded, and made removable legs that place the plane about waist high. At the front of the "base" I screwed a small rectangle of 1/4 in. plywood with low sides to make a tool tray. The plane sits high enough that the prop clears this and I can actually start the plane and run it on this stand. the only thing is that I have to either tie down the rear or weight it so that the prop thrust doesn't pull it over.

The base extending fore and aft allows it to slide around a little in my pickup bed without banging the nose or tail. You can make it wide enough to protect the horiz. tail if you want, and can add other pieces to hold the wings, too. Made mine for about $10, have one for each of my planes. If you screw the joints in places instead of gluing everywhere, you can knock them apart for space savings when not in use.
