Default UCD + Hover + Engine Sag = SPLAT!

A few days ago I was hovering my UCD a couple feet above the ground when the ST 90 sagged. As the UCD fell, the nose pitched slightly down, the tail hit the ground first, and then the plane fell forward and hit the ground fairly flat. The pancake landing broke the nylon bolts holding the landing gear, with virtually no other damage....not even a broken prop.

In fact, this exact same scenerio happened twice within about 15 minutes, and both times all it did was break the nylon bolts holding the landing gear.

Wow, am I glad that the UCD was less than 3 feet from the ground when the engine sagged! Otherwise, this would have been an entirely different story! (In fact, the reason it has nylon bolts is due to a previous engine flameout at a higher altitude. That crash knocked the firewall loose, and broke the landing gear mounting structure.)

Here's an action photo of the UCD that my brother-in-law shot. At first glance, it looks like a UCD taxiing on the runway with the engine idling. But in reality, the photo shows the UCD at the exact moment of impact during one of the pancake "landings". Notice the landing gear has already broken loose, but the prop hasn't yet touched the ground and is still spinning. One wheel is visible under the fuselage near the trailing edge, and the other wheel is visible under the right horizontal stab.
