I used epoxy resin to finish my Byron P-47's flying surfaces. The formers were already installed when I bought it, so I can't say for sure what was used. I am currently building a Y/A P-40, and I will be using BVM AeroPoxy to reinforce the formers. It works with polyester and epoxy resins.
