It will work if the drive unit and small spool are in the handle. Aluminum is pretty soft and pushing it to the tip from the machine doesn't work too well from what I understand. I'm a welder by trade ( at least I used to be), but not aluminum. I do aluminum welding at home, but only heli-arc. I have mig welding experience, but not with aluminum wire. I've often wished I had a wire gun for some of the aluminum projects that I've done. Notice the spool gun in the photo:
