Default Thinning Epoxy for Glassing

I've been reading a few posts here on RCU, regarding different techniques for glassing, and I notice that most thin their epoxy before applying to glass. Now I'm somewhat new to this whole glassing process, so I sort of took a few peoples suggestions, and formulated my own opinion on what would work best for me. Now what I found after trying various techniques, is that if I thin the epoxy when first applying, it would take more resin to do the job. In fact the balsa would soak up the epoxy like a sponge. In essence, I felt like it took more epoxy to do the job.
So I tried using the epoxy straight, and found that I used less epoxy, had a better bond, with better results. Mind you it did take a little longer to apply, and a little more time to squeegy the excess off, but in the end I felt that it produced better results.

* I used West System Epoxy, with their slow hardner, a credit card to squeegy the excess off, then finally if needed a little blotting with some paper towels.

Any thoughts?? I'm just curious as to why most thin their epoxy?? (I've only done a stab, and did one half thinned, and the other the side not thinned.)
