to prevent the balsa from soaking up the resin (which is just adding unnecessary weight) first seal the wood with a sanding sealer. usually one coat is sufficient and you'll use less epoxy. i try to use water-based sealer as it's a little more "enviromentally friendly" but can warp the balsa if it's thin or not well supported.
