If it's like some of the other oleo struts that Robart has available, you cut off all but maybe 1/2" of the gear leg and the strut slips over what's left.

It's secured by a couple of set screws. This way you preserve the fore and aft motion of the gear leg which is good for models and the abuse we give tham.
