Default Servo installation

Hi everybody. I have a question about servo installation. I have seen servos for rudder or elevator control that are installed far back on the fuse, with half the servo sticking out. I have even seen servos on giant scale planes that are mounted right behind the engine for throttle control. Doesn't exaust residue harm servos? Or is there a way which I cannot figure out that it doesn't get on the servos?

Thanks
