Sounds logic to me, why don't you go back for a 2-shoe clutch? Ever thougt of removing the spring? Or drill a hole in the shoes an screw in a bolt or press in a piece of plumb that brings weight, that makes the clutch enganging earlier (at least these were some of the ideas I had to solve the problem when it would have happened to me!)

FS26 is really "small block" ;-) Try to get an FS48, they are really cheap on Ebay!
