I believe it is possible to aquire a watered down version of 3D Studio Max for students. 3D Studio Max allowes for detailed modelling of aircrafts and just about anything else. It does not however concentrate on line drawings. You may wish to go here http://www4.discreet.com and make some inquiry's.

Oh! and remember to visit the second thread on the forum about Modelling Software, you may find some usefull information there.

Here is a few things that I have done using 3D Studio Max, it should give you an idea of what it can do for you.
