the black canopy looks excellent. I take it you painted the INSIDE of the canopy?
what sort of paint can be used on that plastic which is also fuelproof... do i need to treat the plastic with some special primer first?

R/C racing finish is likely what he used (For clear lexan R/C car bodies) and is available at almost any hobby shop. It is specifically designed for such plastics, is flexible, fuel proof, and adhears very, very well. Just be sure to wash the canopy with warm soap and water first and, obviously, paint it on the inside!
