By no means, should you be charging a Li-Po on the way to the field.
I'm guessing he said that because of the tendency of lipos to burst into flames. personally i do NOT charge lipos in my vehicle, and they are stored in a ceramic mug while charging at home. (i do field charge, they just aren't in the vehicle)
