You have to thank RTR for making r/c what it is today, mainly the E maxx.
RTR allows people on a budget to get into the hobby and the run there r/c the day they pick it up and not weeks after since they had to save up for all the rest of that equipment needed.
It would be nice however if they offered almost rtr kits that you could build and have the the elctronics in the box when you get it.
My latest project was a rtr xxx-s II came with a not bad looking body and great electronics. However that didn't stop me from rebuilding the whole car after I got it with a full graphite conversion and lots of other goodies.
