Jim,
Did you adjust the low speed needle at all, or just the high speed needle? On the 46 LA the carb is an "air bleed" type, so you're actually adjusting the air not the fuel, therefore you have to turn it in to richen or out to lean it.

Sounds like your's might have been too rich.
