**** man i cant remember. everything. I do remeber we swapped to the british motors because the plane was under powered and could not go long distances. When we swap motor in the P51 the pilots said that the new british motors had more power at 20000feet than the other motors did at take off.
You got it right i was watching a show about the p-51 the other night and learend a lot the P-51 was designed and built for the british but it was found that the allison engines did not perform well at higher altitudes so the british had them fitted with the same merlin engines that were in the spitfires. the P-51 in my eyes was and still is one of the best looking fighters built during the war years.
my dad when he was a kid used to watch the spifires and hurricanes scramble and engage in dog fights overhead. what a sight that must have been
