RE: Yokomo Drift
Hey fellow Canuck!! It all depends on what youre planning on doing with your car that will dictate what you buy for a radio, esc, and motor. from what i've read so far all around, and heard from friends, and experienced myself, 27 turn motors are pretty good for drifting. thats if drifting is all youre gonna be doing with your D1. i dunno how well they handle with normal on-road tires, since theyre built for drifting. but i have a reedy quad mag 19 turn in my car, and it drifts fine. and its pretty fast too. you dont need anything really spectacular if all youre doing is drifting. and the higher the turns, the longer your run time on a battery pack is gonna be.
i bought a decent esc with forward and reverse (yes, forward only does mean no reverse). the LRP A.I. Super from Associated. its good for i think down to 15 turns. it set me back 115 bones, but meh, i wasnt puttin total crap in my car. the A.I. stands for artificial intelligence, which means that you dont have to fool around with setting it up. sure, you could go with fancy stuff like novak brushless stuff, but if youre on a budget, i dunno. i guess theyre cheaper in the long run, since theyre maintenance free, but theyre a lot more money to part with right away. you might even consider getting an esc that supports both brushless and brushed motors, so you can upgrade your motor later without having to buy another esc.
as far as radios go, you dont need anything fancy for just drifting on your street or in a parking lot. i dont think RC drift competitions are all that big yet in T.O. so if its just you and a few friends, dont go too fancy. you dont need a $500 radio for drifting. i picked up a JR Racing XR3i for about 260 bones. the guy gave me a bit of a deal, i think. its a three channel, but you dont need that for an electric car, unless you wanna run something else (it also comes in a two channel model). it has a lot of good features for trim and end point adjustment and all sorts of crazy stuff. i havent even seen all of what it can do yet. it has four different memory spots for 4 different models to save your settings. i found it pretty decent, but then, i dont really have anything to compare it to. but it exceeded my expectations for a radio. it comes with an 85 ounce inch steering servo, and a 50 ounce inch auxilary servo for whatever.
i hope that helped you out a bit.
