Default RE: Enough engine for the big bird?

I have a Brison 5.8 in my Ziroli Corsair and it has very good performance and weighs about 35 lbs. The 5.8 definitely would not be enough engine for a 50 - 60 lb Corsair. You could get it off the ground and fly it around but it would be a pig in the air and you wouldn't like it.

I'm not just guessing. I have a very good friend who flies a 54 lb all composite F8F Bearcat. He uses a DA-150 twin to fly it in a very realistic manner. The DA performs very well but the plane is certainly not over powered, it's just right.

Another big consideration on a plane that size and weight is your selection of landing gear. Gear such as the Robart rotating retracts which work fine in my Corsair would crumple under a landing with the plane you have in mind. Going up to a plane that size multiplies the problems.

Here are a few photos of the big Bearcat and my Corsair.

Good Luck,

Ken
