I would mount the engine inverted to keep it inside the elongated cowl. The plane would look like crap if you mount the engine sideway or at a 45° angle with the head sticking out. The cowl is big enough to house a nice four stroke engine.

I have the Model Tech 46 size P-51D. The covering is pretty good. However, the plane has some fitment issues.
