At 650', I doubt you could control a plane the size of the Mini-Funtana.. It would be a speck. Most 3D planes never more than 200' away.
For glicers, it's different, these do get altitude and distance... as long as the plane is about 20 degrees above the horizon, the range should be adequate.
I've flown my Feather receiver in a high-performance electric sailplane, and on the slope without any loss of range.
Small planes far away are not going to survive very long... just because they're small.
My Micro-Air 9"span thingie goes invisible at 200'.
