i started out just flying with my thumbs, and was very comfortable with it for awhile. At some point, I don't know when, I started using a neckstrap and thumbs and fingers, and I like that better now. However, there are some maneuvers where I realize that I am using just thumbs, like high alpha rolls. I believe that thumb and finger really does help with precision. When I switched to thumbs and fingers, it took quite awhile to get used to it, so give either method some time.
