Whatvever everyone is comfortable with. My reference has been the world's top flyers, such as the TOC pilots. I saw that some use the thumbs, some use the "pinch". If the very best pilots cannot prove that one method is good, and the other is not, then either method is OK for for rest of us..............................Kind of like mode 1 and mode 2.................a whole other debate there.
