I like your idea of a "reversed reed block" (as per your crude drawing in post #42) with the reeds opening on the outside of the block instead of in the center. Now, consider locating it in the bottom of the crankcase opposite the cylinder. This should provide minimum crankcase volumn and a fairly straght path to the cylinder bypass ports...
