My first flight with this was without the outriggers, and was probably pretty comical to onlookers. The glider rotated sideways while still coupled to the tug, then one wing tipped down. This jammed the release so I was forced to land with a glider stuck sideways on top of the tug. Quite a handful. Fortunately it all survived. The wing supports (outriggers as you called them) don't seem to add any noticeable drag, but are absolutely required to stabilize the glider on top of the tug.
