)and which I had also noticed is the way that the turbine wheel had been balanced. Instead of using the balancing rings a big gash had been gouged out of the hub to get the correct balance, this could potentially weaken the hub leading to failure of the turbine wheel.

Nice photos and thanks for showing the CC, I like to see the burn patterns around the pre burn area. On the later production wheels for the JJ1400 they are balanced on the outer ring as per this photo.
