After double-checking the alignment of the wing, I cut the horizontal stab slot free (I left it only partially cut out when I cut the fuselage side sheeting so it would be easier to line up the sides) and trimmed it so the sides are even. I'll finish trimming when I'm ready to permanently attach the horizontal stab. Sanded the stab ends to approximately the right shape, then drew a template for the rounded end to sand the other side exactly the same.
