First Flight
Took my newly finished Phaeton 90 for it first flight today. One of the best things about it is I can fit it into the back of my Dodge Dakota with cap. It's a tight squeeze but goes in whole so no prep-time at the field!
Almost no prep time...when I started fueling her up, the fuel started running out the muffler as quick as I was pumping. Wouldn't ya know it, had the fuel lines crossed. Luckily, I don't have the cowl on yet since it hasn't come from Stan's Fiber Tech yet. Anyway, once the lines were rerouted and the tank was full, the old tired super tigre 3000 fired up on the first flip. The 3000 proved to be more than enough engine for the plane, even here at 5200 feet. It took off with just a very short run down the runway. In the air, it would perform loops at only 1/3 throttle. As many suggested on here, I added ailerons to the top wing also. Rolls were very scale-like on low rate and rather quick on high rate. The plane handles very easily and slows down to a crawl for landing. As it was it's first flight, I didn't attempt anything too drastic.
In addition to adding the ailerons, I also changed the shape of the rudder (more round) and angled the rear deck down more sharply toward the tail so not to look so boxy. Because of the size and weight of the engine, I moved the firewall back and mounted the receiver and servos in the rear. For the ailerons, I used two servos mounted in the wing. I used 4-40 wire for all controls except throttle.
I also used the landing gear and wheel pants from the Sig Four Star as suggested. They really dress it up. I used the music wire cabanes in the center but outboard I used pre-shaped wood struts.
All total, ready to fly without fuel, 14 lbs exactly.
I'm very happy with the plane so far and recommend it.
