That's a pulse-jet engine, similar to the old Dynajet. It operates on a very simple principle. The full-scale German V-1 rockets used pulse-jet engines, and their sound led to them being dubbed "buzz-bombs."

I have never seen nor heard one of these type engines run, but I understand they are VERY loud!
