It has nothing to do with the crystal.
Do you use a Futaba receiver for your Futaba transmitter...you should! No Hitec receiver please!
Check the battery power for your receiver!
Also check range,how far you can move away from the reciever with the transmitter in hand.
Do this without transmitter antenna (unscrew it ). Range should be 4-6m. Only 1-2 m and you better trim the receiver.
