Default RE: Best way to clean cylinder/piston head?

Hi,

I've been a mechanic for 35+ years, and short of a hot tank, I really haven't found anything that will really dissolve carbon well. The antifreeze/crock pot deal works great for glow engines with castor oil deposits, but I haven't found it to do a thing for gasoline/oil created carbon deposits. Any of the chemical cleaners that did do anything good at all have been outlawed by our loving government.

The best I can suggest is to soak everything in a solution of paint thinner (mineral spirites) and automatic transmission fluid. This will not remove the deposits, but it will make them softer and easier to remove with plastic tools, then either a brass wire brush and/or Scotchbrite pads.

Cleaner up!
