I generally do 3 good steps then a nice firm toss. I try to be smooth but accurate. The tip about aiming 100 yards in front is a good one cause the plane will always climb faster than where you point it. I'd say toss it harder than you think you need to just to be safe. The important thing is to make sure it's a controlled toss. You want the wings to leave your hand as level as possible.
