A 3D type plane with the throws turned all the way up flies gerat. A 3D plane with the throws turned down flies like crap. The aerodynamics of the wing and general airframe require large surfaces and extreme throws. Trainers are specifically designed to fly slowly and gently. They also self-correct to some extent.
