It sounds like your engine wasn't square with the spur gears. You can use the straight edge of a piece of paper or a business card to line up the engine with the spurs. This is just as critical as setting the mesh and should be done before setting the mesh. If the engine isn't square with the gears you aren't going to get the proper mesh.
