Have you checked the batteries? Alkaline batteries drain pretty fast and it is possible for a cell to go bad on a rechargeable pack.
The stock radio leaves a lot to be desired. Check out the radio swap post from CEN it really is a good deal and can be used on multiple cars.
I highly suggest getting a failsafe that way if your radio messes up it will cut power to the car. Of course the batteries need to be good for it to work. You can also put a throttle return spring on the carb, you will have to do a search on the forums to find out how to set one up.
