RE: Saito 220 WOW!!
Ok........The manual said it would swing a 20x8. The closest thing the LHS had was a 20x6 so I grabbed it up and headed out. I think this is to much prop, I hope that is the problem. It would only get 7800 rpm with that prop. It sounded sorta labored.
I could not get it tuned just right, It was way fat on the bottom end but I tried to ignore it. set the top end to about 7500 and off we go. It was so fat on the bottom it didn't want to idle so I had to kinda burp it around on the runway. It was a slow day at the field so I had the entire field to my self.........with a hand full of on lookers wanting a show........THE PRESSURE!!!!!!! Well I just burped it up and down the runway till I got the nerve to send it up. FAT FAT FAT!!! smoking heavy but very responsive, wanting to jump off the ground. When it got up it got even fatter and lost I'm guessing maybe 400 or 500 RPMs but even at that it was a monster. When I got it back down I turned the low end in about a half a turn and it then was to lean on the bottom and when I turned it back out it kicked the prop on throttle up. I just couldn't get it tuned in well enough to fly it again but I had a 18x8 at the house and plan to try that tomorrow.
It used no more fuel than my 1.50 that I could tell. I have a 16oz tank and it used about half that on a 8 to 10 minute flight. Maybe I had it way to lean LOL!!!!!! it was not scary hot tho. Anyway I have no doubt it will come on line when I find the prop it likes. I started it with a standard 12v starter and a stout battery. When I turned it over the first I had to check and see if it had a plug in it, seemed to have no compression but when it got fuel and fire there was no doubt it had all it needed. Must need to seat the ring a bit. After it started the first time it took all the starter had to get it spinning but it lit every time as soon as it rolled over the top. Oh yeah!! I turned the bottom end screw in the first time because it would not idle without the glo stick till I did.
All in all it did well considering it was trying to spin to much prop. At least this is what I'm thinking. I'll report again tomorrow evening after I try the other one.
OH YEAH!!!! it sounds great...........kinda like a VW beetle without the whistle.
Miloh.
