I never tried the finger thing. I'd hate to get a "paper-cut" from a flywheel spinning at 5k RPM! Ok maybe I'm a wussy but a whole lot of people do it.
I simply cover the exhaust with my finger (or anything else) and it works fine. Only problem is, it'll make your engine a tad rich to start again.
