It sounds like your tail motor is getting weak. It would not hurt to try a new one.

How do I go about changing out the motor? Looks like I can unscrew it from the tail, but am I supposed to re-solder the connections or thread the long wire through the tail rod? Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions; I'm completely new to R/C vehicles.
