they can go with 2 sensors working overkill is built in. There has never been a problem with the orbiter itself. Challenger was from srb problems and columbia was an et problem. They nee TAL capability if an engine goes out that is the problem or they can abort to KSC. The turbines cant run dry they would overspeed and damage the orbiter.
