Surely the problem is the magnet, Neodinium magnets loose the magnetic properties if heated, so, if you had enogh temperature to burn the cables, sure that the magnet is de-magnetized. Standard Neodinium allow up to 80ºC, but the one you have (if a wren nut) is OK up to 150ºC.
