Ringed engines require a lot more break-in time & care -- but they are much cheaper to re-build when they wear out -- potentially very long lifetimes.

ABC types usually are quick to break in & usually (but not always) produce a bit more power than similarly sized ringed engines. They also usually have shorter lives & are not usually worth re-building when the piston & sleeve wear out.
