When you are running off-road, you are pulling alot higher amperage due to the overall speed, and rolling resistance, than you do at full throttle ( running balls-to-the-wall ) on the street.
That higher amperage will equate to higher operating temperatures.

Remember, the amperage draw on the battery by the motor ( through the ESC ) is inversely proprtional to the speed that the motor is operating at.
